CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT PROTOCOL

The Lincoln-Way Hockey Club is committed to the health, safety, and well-being of all of our players. Concussions are a type of traumatic brain injury that can occur from a direct or indirect impact to the head or body. Because concussion symptoms may not always be immediately apparent, all suspected concussions will be taken seriously and managed according to the USA Hockey's Concussion Management Program.

The Lincoln-Way Hockey Club also uses the King-Devick (K-D) Test as a screening tool when a concussion is suspected.

The K-D Test is a brief, timed assessment of rapid number naming that evaluates aspects of eye movement, attention, and information processing. When properly administered, the player's post-injury performance may be compared with their established individual baseline. All registered LWHDC players will complete K-D baseline testing prior to the start of the season. A K-D test does not diagnose or rule out a concussion and will never be used as the sole basis for determining whether a player may return to play. A player who is suspected of having a concussion must be evaluated by an appropriate health care professional, regardless of the K-D test result.
